Missing pieces of the puzzle

Hello there! It has been awhile since I last posted and I apologize for that! Between 3 young babies, standardized testing, and whatnot... it has been a challenge!

Have you noticed that vocabulary has seemed to go downhill in the past few years? Seems when kids come to me their reading levels are a few grades under and their vocabulary follows suit. What is causing this phenomenon??

My guess is that there are a few factors involved...
* There are less parents reading to kids. I do understand! Working a job (or maybe two), with a household of kids to get fed, bathed, and homework done before bed, maybe even a single income household or single parent household. Times are hard and that means on the parents too... unfortunately, this is not helping our children in the department of loving or learning how to read and grow their vocabulary.

* Technology is also become a major culprit. Children are spending far more time playing on Wii, Xbox, Nintendo DS, IPad, and cellphones. (My 5th graders had a smartphone before me! What??) They are spending less time reading, do imaginative play, or even talking and having conversations with individuals.

So, what do we do as teachers to help the situation?

1. Read, read, read to our kids. Even my 5th graders love a good book and the novelty of curling up on pillows and listening in. We are currently reading Where the Red Fern Grows and I let them know that we will not get through this book without a tons of tears (from myself). I think it is good for students to hear the teacher read and experience his/her own reactions to the book as they read. I discussed with my kids that this was a book from my childhood and not a time as gone by that I have read this book and didn't cry. I'm not sure if my kids last year could hear the ending clearly through my sobs (lol) but they cried right along with me! Choose books that are meaningful, will make a personal impact, and that is rich in experience and vocabulary. If you are reading to them, you can go a level higher than what they can (or more!) and this will allow them to experience stories they would have otherwise missed out on. Also, it can be a good motivator to improve their reading when they see the quality of stories that are out there once they get to those higher levels. (Another series I just LOVE to share with my students is the Fablehaven series... this is in an earlier post)

2. Surround your kids with vocabulary! Students need to not only hear it but they also need to see it and use it! Cover your walls with vocabulary that you can constantly refer to throughout the year! This is great for lower level kiddos. If you can add a picture to help associate... then even better! You could have a spot for academic vocabulary, current novel vocabulary, daily use vocabulary, or different themes as they come into your classroom. You could even have a living vocabulary wall that students can modify as they discover difficult and interesting words. Over the computers, you could have technology words, and over your centers you could have words associated to the current lesson. Cover their desks with daily use words like: pencil, paper, paragraph, etc... Students could carry a popular word reference sheet or handmade dictionary to refer to when doing their daily writing.

3. Have your students write daily! Always have students write in complete sentences. Who else has heard the question, "Can I use text language?" Uh... no. Texting has ruined our kiddos! Give them a plethora of opportunities to respond, think, create, and motivate! I have seen over the years where sentences seem to longer start with a capital nor do they have to end in any sort of punctuation. My kids just left 4th grade where I KNOW they were taught how to write due to the writing test they are required to take in 4th grade. How does it all dissolve over the summer? It is a shame that we have little control over what our students read and write over the summer. It feels like we play catch up the first half of the year and then are allowed to begin moving them toward their new goals for their current grade. It is frustrating for the teacher as well as the students. But, you can only focus on what you have control over... so no texting language! (Unless you are doing some super cool texting activity... then I'll let it slide ;-)

It is sooo fun and admittedly a bit addictive! I wanted to introduce a new line that I will be placing in my TPT store soon. I have tons of ideas that I want to go with this but I am starting out with weekly idioms. You could easily show more than one if you would like to cover more than one each week. These could be placed on classroom computers for students to review and use in centers. There are tons of ways to use these!

Enjoy and let me know what you think! I'm always looking to improve and inspire. I'm hoping to get my first set of idioms in my store in the next couple of days!

What idioms would you be interested in seeing? :)
I think I like it! I'm going to try this out in my classroom this week since we are learning about text features and see how it goes!

What do you think? Would you like the see more? Should I put music in the background or leave it mute so you can talk over it with it in the background? I made a few tiny errors here or there and fixed them as it ran lol. Can't alter it in this program without starting all over. Hey, it can be a quick lesson that even teachers make mistakes and have to fix them sometimes lol Maybe you won't even notice them lol

tell me what you think!
If you would like to see more, what topics would you be interested in??
I had drawn each of the body systems and then we copied them onto transparencies ( man that was a long time ago huh? Now I'm dating myself :)

As the kiddos learned about the body systems they received their clear transparency version. We had them use sharpie markers (already a winner when they get to use sharpies) to color the different parts.

Then they would layer the body systems onto one another so they could see how they fit together. Leave a small place on top of the head to staple so they will stay together. Maybe shape it like a hat? lol :)

The kids had a lot of fun and it made for a really cool parent open house showing!

Feel free to free hand the different systems to make a copy but it you are not in the mood you can always download my body systems clip art which has the blackline (which is perfect for letting students color in) and the colored version if you don't feel like tackling markers in class. Click here!

It is so nice to run across a product that is focused toward the upper grades and teaching something as basic as the sentence. So many times, teachers seem to just assume that students come to them with this basic knowledge and don't provide their students with an opportunity to refresh and grow in their knowledge of sentence structure.

This quality PowerPoint contains four great lessons for teaching the structure of the sentence. The lessons are clear and well put together so that even struggling students will be able to easily understand and learn this basic and so badly needed concept!
It is so easy to use!

Go to http://www.pixlr.com/express
The site looks extremely simple... and it is! For this, I am going to click on collage to show you how to make a collage of pictures. See the box on the far right that says collage? Click it!

It will then pull up the default for four pictures but there are a ton of different layouts to choose from! See where I have clicked the box "layout" below and all the options come up? Click the up and down arrows on the bottom right of the box for more!

So I chose a three picture to make it look like a photo booth print out... wouldn't that be fun for your students??? When you put your mouse over a box, a + will appear. Click on the plus sign.

By clicking on the + it will send you to your computer files to choose a picture! I have chosen three down below! See the check mark with the word Finished in the bottom right corner? Click on that when you are done!

It will pull up some new boxes for you to play with!

The effects box gives you play with the color. When you are click on a box, more options show up for that category.

The overlay box... well... overlays an image over your pictures. Again, these are categories so clicking on a box will bring up several options.

The border box again gives you tons of fun options

Stickers are by category as well. If you click on Halloween... it will give you a bunch of Halloween stickers you could add.

You can even add text!

When you are done, click save in the top left of the screen and you will be given the chance to name and save! The files are not huge, but big enough to play with. Especially, if you have your students working with blogs and things of that sort. Wouldn't it be fun to let them make a collage of their work to display to parents?? So many ideas! Post a comment below about how you could use this in the classroom!

So here is a picture of the foam cutouts.

I drew a simple Jack-O-Lantern face onto the pumpkin. There are tons of options here! You can do them or if you teach an older class they can do the work!

Then I cut them out using my scissors (an exacto knife would work to), and then glued a sheet of paper behind them. Yellow paper would be super cute too... but alas... didn't have any and didn't have the time to make some! Then, I colored in the mouth and tadaa!

Have the students choose (or assign them) an overused word and then let them fill in the paper shapes with synonyms! Enjoy!

Welcome to your first Craftastic Challenge.

What is a Craftastic Challenge?
It is where you take a random commonplace item and try to find a creative way to transform it into something useful to use in the classroom. As teachers, we are have to dig deep sometimes and use our crafty selves to make our classroom fun and functional at the same time!

How do I participate?
You will need to create a fun and creative yet functional item for use in the classroom using the random item set for the challenge. (Think Craft Wars). Then blog about it. At the bottom of your blog, you will need to add a link to the linky party so your readers can hop to see all the creative and wonderful ideas they can use with simple items around them in their own classrooms!

Are you ready?

Craftastic Challenge Number One:

Egg Carton!

Let your imaginations run and let's see what you can make for the classroom! Most creative wins! (Who knows maybe there could be a prize awarded at the end of the month!)
A Treat for Any Teacher to have!

See all those goodies up there in the picture? I had a great time looking through all of the options for fun treat bag labels for my classroom! These can be found in a fun TeachersPayTeachers store called What's the Buzz in First.

Click here to check out her store!

As you can see in the picture above there is a plethera of fun, colorful, and extremely useful goodie-bag labels and more in her Sweet Treat Notes Collection. Click here to check it out!

There is a little of everything here! She has covered all of the holidays and have included some fun classroom ideas. She gives you wonderful ideas on how to use each of the labels and types of candy that would go well with each. There are labels for back to school, encouragement, holidays, reading and much more!

Although you would definitely want to print these in color, some of us don't have access to color printers (like myself). The good news, these still print great in gray-scale and the kids will still love them!

One of my favorite ideas from this packet is the Book Fairy. She suggests using Scholastic Points to buy books and place the Book Fairy tag on the wrapped up book as a gift for students. What kid doesn't love getting things like that in the classroom? Especially the younger grades will get a kick out of a Book Fairy! (But I think my 5th graders would secretly love it too ;))

I'm addictedSo I recently was able to purchase my first IPad and I have to admit... I'm a little addicted. Well, that is I'm addicted to playing when my 4 and 2 year old allow me to play on it LOL. Have to love our technology generation of toddlers out there!

So, I have begun the fun tasks of accumulating mass apps because there are a ton of really awesome apps out there! I wanted to share some of my favorites and then invite you to share yours. Can never discover too many awesome apps :))

Art Studio ($4.99)
I love this app for drawing. This is one of the main apps I use to create clip art. It is easy to figure out and has a ton of options that make drawing so fun and engaging!
Paper by 53 (FREE)
Okay, this app is pretty awesome. You do have to purchase in the in-app brushes in order to get some of the effects such as watercolor brush which was worth the entire purchase! You have to try out the watercolor brush!! The writing and drawing is so fluid and beautiful on this app. A must try!
Ambiance ($2.99)
I love this sound machine app! There are tons of different sounds to choose from plus a few premium that you can pay for but there are so many great ones under the free ones you won't feel the need to buy any! These sounds do NOT sound computer-generated. They are so realistic and beautiful. I actually woke up thinking there was an awesome thunderstorm outside and then remembered I had set it to thunderstorm before bed. Check this one out!!
Easy Portfolio ($1.99)
I think this will be a very useful app once the school year begins. You can take pictures of work and place them in folders along with notes and audio to create portfolios for your students. I see great potential with this app.

Both of these have the potential of acting like a whiteboard that will record as you write and what you are saying. I haven't decided which app I like better but will be giving both a try this year! Great for creating lessons for absentees, subs, and more!
Nick Jr. Draw and Play ($6.99)
Had to share this app as it is my 4 and 2 year olds FAVORITE app. It is so popular I bought it again for my husband's IPad so they could each play at the same time. This app is a pretty awesome and interactive drawing and creating app for kids. Definitely one to check out if you have little ones at home!!

http://www.showme.com

This is a really cool website where you can create lessons on an interactive whiteboard for students to watch. It's a little like a slide show with a voice over. The only BAD thing is... you have to own an IPad in order to use it. Unfortunately... I do not yet... so I can't really review on the ease of use for this product.

BUT...

There are TONS of really great lessons already created on this website that you can view with your students over all kinds of topics! It is also free to use and once the videos are published you can see them online.

You can also place these into projects from Prezi and other similar formats which just adds to the fuctionality.

This program would be a really easy way (if you own an IPad) to show students a lesson if you were going to be out with a sub or you wanted them to have a reference to go back to when at home working on homework. It would be a great reference for parents who do not understand a lesson or how you have taught it to the kids. They could pull it off your school website and then help their kiddos!

Check it out and tell me what you think!

I had a moment this week where I realized how desensitized our kids are to certain things in society. One of my coworkers that I have worked with for 6 years has recently announced that she will be moving to a new school next year. She told the kids as next week is our last week of school. One of my students wrote an entire play and wanted to get the kids involved in parts so they could perform it and dedicate it to the teacher. (Awesome!)

A group of my boys thought they were too cool for a play and decided they wanted to make a song for her. They are used to me taking popular songs and changing the words to fit our AR celebrations in front of the school and so they asked me how I do it. I told them I print off the lyrics and then start changing it to fit my needs. I've done songs from YMCA to Respect by Aretha Franklin. I told them to choose a song and I will print it off for them once I check out the lyrics.

So, the boys get excited and come tell me their song choice. They shuffle their feet and eyes dart a little before telling me that there is one or two cuss words in the intro part but if I would just cross those out when I give them the lyrics then they can change it to a science song.

O...m...g. The song they chose was "The Motto" by Drake. I'll give you a second to Google the lyrics to the song before you continue reading...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
(Enter choice shocked expression)
Uh... right? That's what I said when I started reading through the lyrics. That entire song would be one long black line if I crossed out the unacceptable stuff.

I have come to conclusion that they never really paid attention to the words and only liked the catchy chorus and beat along with a few choice lines they thought were cool in there. They write the word "YOLO" on everything they touch so I know they worship this song. When I gasped in class and told them there was no way I was letting them use this song they were shocked.

"But it's on the radio Mrs. Richards!" And it is... all they do is blank out the worst of it. Why is this junk being played on the radio constantly for listening ears? Young listening ears... I get that songs have their place in society but I think our radio community has a responsibility that they are not taking seriously. Popular stations that play pop music are playing songs repeatedly like the one above... pausing out the "naughty word" isn't enough.

Of course, PARENTS NEED TO BE AWARE OF WHAT THEIR CHILDREN ARE LISTENING TO! Please, parents you HAVE to listen and look at what your children are listening to. You have to be aware that many songs have suggestive content that your children are quoting, listening to, and surrounding their lives around!

The fact that these kids actually suggested to their teacher to print off this song tells me surely they did not truly know what all the words were saying... but it concerns this 5th grade teacher when I see mention of parts of the song in all that they do.

What do you think?5th Gradehttp://www.blogger.com/profile/15520606842262686419noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2994560145653581881.post-90476191572294031112012-05-12T10:38:00.000-07:002012-05-12T10:38:16.754-07:00AVID-ly Awesome

Our school is now in their 3rd year of the AVID program. If you haven't heard of this program, it is spreading across the country and is lighting the education program on fire! The long term goal of this program is to get children college-bound and ready. It focuses on organization, note-taking and study skills among others. It is more developed in the junior highs and high schools but for the last three years we have been enjoying it at the elementary level!

In elementary our students focus on:
1. Having a binder that contains all of their classwork and homework divided by the different subjects
2. An assignment notebook that stays in the binder and this is where they write down classwork, homework, and extracurricular activities daily. Parents are expected to sign and be involved in the monitoring of their student's daily activities.
3. They learn how to take 2 and 3-column notes and eventually Cornell notes.
4. They focus on the writing and reading processes and strategies for success

Our students have been working extremely hard in mastering all of these skills and we recently rewarded them!

4th-6th grade is where AVID is implemented at this time and each 4th-6th grade teacher chose 10 students out of their class that showed the AVID skills and shined. These were placed in a grade level box. 4th and 5th drew for a gift card from Target while 6th grade drew for a Kindle! There was also a $500 scholarship awarded from our local university and more! There were guests speakers and 4th and 5th watched a movie and munched on popcorn to celebrate their hard work this year. There are a lot generous people out there and I would love to thank AVID and the private individuals in our community who donated amazing items to reward our kiddos!

Here are some of kiddos having an AVID-ly awesome time learning this year!
